CHAPTER FIFTEEN

LEYTON DECIDED THIS was one of those days that he didn’t want to repeat. It was as if all the weird people and crap in the universe had joined together in a “let’s mess with the sheriff” day.

He’d gotten two calls before he’d even made it to the office. One from Bernice Biggs, Em’s part-time housekeeper, who’d complained that someone had TP’d her house and yard. That wasn’t unusual. The crotchety woman often pissed off people, but Leyton concluded that this must have been a major pissing off.

Since Leyton was nearby Bernice’s when the call came in, he’d responded and had soon discovered that there wasn’t a single spot on her house, yard, shrubs or flowers not covered with toilet paper. Not dry stuff, either, but rather wet globs that appeared to have been hurled by those with good aims.

Leyton figured at least a hundred rolls had been used, so that meant the culprits had likely pooled their money, since TP wasn’t cheap. His chief suspects were the entire baseball team that practiced on the diamond just behind Bernice’s house. Bernice had admitted the team had it in for her since she’d refused to give them back any baseball that landed in her yard. She had also admitted that she slept like the dead and hadn’t heard what would have likely been a dozen or more teenagers smacking wet toilet paper against her house.

While Leyton had been taking Bernice’s report and trying to calm the woman down, he’d gotten another call. This one was from Zach and Alyssa, who apparently hadn’t learned their lesson, because this time her navel ring had gotten caught on his zipper. Since it wasn’t even lunchtime, it was obvious that the two didn’t wait until night to do their fooling around on Prego Trail.

The oddball calls had continued even after he’d finally freed Zach and gotten to his office. There was a loose rooster on Main Street squawking at people and trying to peck them. That was followed by complaints of—surprise, surprise!—rooster shit on the sidewalks. Followed by more complaints of there not being a single roll of toilet paper for sale anywhere in town.

Some days they didn’t pay him enough for this job.

Leyton figured, though, that all of that wouldn’t have dragged him down so much if he’d managed to get some good news about Marco. But nothing. Marco had gone into the Pacifico Hotel, which didn’t have security cameras in the lobby, asked about Em and, when he’d gotten the answer that she wasn’t there, vanished again. As long as Marco was in the wind, Em, Tony, Hadley and her sisters wouldn’t be resting easy. Which meant he wouldn’t be resting, either.

He would be with Hadley, however.

That was definitely a ray of sunshine in his day. That morning he’d left her with a reminder, a suggestion that he wanted her in his bed tonight. One way or another she would be, since he had no intention of letting her sleep on the hall floor, but having her in his bed didn’t mean sex.
